The Ascended Heroes Hype is Getting Out of Hand (And It's Making You Miss Better Cards)

Okay, I'm going to say something that's going to make some of you close this tab immediately, and honestly? Fair enough.

Ascended Heroes is not the be-all and end-all of the 2026 Pokémon TCG landscape. There. I said it. Certified in nothing, as always, but I've been sitting on this take for a while and I think it's time we talked about it.

Now, before you come for me — I'm not saying it's a bad set. The Mega Gengar ex SIR is stunning. I won't pretend otherwise. Gengar deserves his flowers, and the community is right that he's been criminally underrepresented in terms of premium chase cards for years. The Mewtwo rebound? Also completely earned. These cards are genuinely special.

But here's the thing.

The sheer gravitational pull of Ascended Heroes hype has become its own kind of problem. It's warping how people see everything else — and I think a lot of collectors are going to look back in about a year and realize they either overpaid for Ascended Heroes singles at the hype peak, or worse, completely ignored sets around it that are quietly doing their own thing.

The Scalper Mentality Problem Afflicting Ascended Heroes

I brought this up in my Perfect Order post and I'm bringing it up again because it's still relevant: scalper mentality is poisoning how a lot of people evaluate cards.

When a set launches to massive retail availability, the immediate reaction is "nobody wants this." When one set becomes the consensus darling, suddenly every other set released within a six-month window gets treated like filler. That's not how collecting works — or at least, it's not how good collecting works.

The sets that people sleep on during a hype cycle are almost always the ones that quietly appreciate later, because while everyone was pouring their money into the obvious play, supply of everything else just... sat there. Waiting. For people to notice.

What You're Actually Missing

Let me ask you something. When's the last time you actually looked at the Destined Rivals pull sheet without immediately comparing it to Ascended Heroes?

Because there are cards in that set that have genuinely gorgeous art. The kind of art that, in a year or two, when the rose-coloured Gengar glasses finally come off, people are going to be hunting for. I've seen this exact pattern play out before — Phantasmal Flames is a perfect example. Affordable, a little overlooked, and now? The Art Rares from that set are absolutely being sought after at card shows.

The Pokémon community has a short memory and a herd mentality, and right now the herd is entirely pointed at Ascended Heroes. Which is, again, fine — but it's not the whole picture.

"But the Chase Cards Don't Compare"

This is the argument I hear most, and I half-agree with it. Yes, the Mega Gengar ex SIR is more valuable than the chase cards in some of the sets surrounding Ascended Heroes. That's just true right now.

But "valuable right now" and "the right card for your collection" are two very different things. If you're building a collection you actually love — one you're going to look at and feel something about — chasing whatever happens to have the highest TCGplayer market price this week is a weird way to do it.

And if you are purely investing? Then honestly, the Ascended Heroes ship may have already sailed for the best entry points. The Mega Gengar ex has climbed consistently every week since the set became widely available. You're not getting in cheap at this point.

The smarter move — and again, certified in nothing, this is just yapping — is to look at what's being ignored right now and ask yourself why. Is it actually worse, or has the noise just drowned it out?

What I Actually Think Happens Next

I think the 30th Anniversary set later this year is going to completely reset the conversation. When that drops, suddenly everything from early 2026 is going to look like the "before times" and there will be a whole new consensus darling to obsess over. And the cards that got quietly ignored during the Ascended Heroes era? They'll still be there, sitting at prices that actually make sense, waiting for the collectors who were paying attention.

I could be wrong. I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again. But I've watched this community long enough to know that the sets people dismiss are rarely as forgettable as the hype cycle makes them seem.

So maybe, just maybe, look up from the Gengar SIR for two seconds and see what else is out there.
